This is a superb example of an Italian Limewood Carved Madonna and Child in The Salzburg tradition. The Condition is very good with no losses and wear consistent with age. The polychrome and Gilt is still vibrant and the sculpture is similar to compositions from the Salzburg area dating to the late 15th century. There is a striking parallel for the Virgin's youthful and pointed facial features, with a downcast gaze and subtle smile, as seen in a Madonna from St Johann in den Tauern, now in the Liebieghaus, Frankfurt. I do not normally buy religious sculpture but the quality of this one which I purchsed here in Dublin is exceptional.
